How does the acne treatment work?
Active acne
The NLite pulsed dye laser works in two ways:
1The laser light kills the acne bacteria that cause infection and lead to the formation of spots. As the whole face is usually treated the bacteria are killed over a wide area reducing breakout and stopping the infection spreading.2The formation of large amounts of new collagen below and around the spots gives a huge boost to the healing process, causing spots to disappear with the decreased likelihood of acne scars developing.
Acne Scarring
Acne scarring is the response of the skin when it is damaged by infection, inflammation and scar tissue.
The NLite pulsed dye laser works by heating up the lower layers of the skin producing collagen that stimulates a healing response. This acts as a new foundation for the skin, reducing scarring and improving skin tone. With regards to Dermaroller 192 micro needles on a roller are rolled on to the area to be treated. The needles penetrate the dermis layer of the skin up to 1.3mm below the surface. Subsequently, a wound healing response is initiated which stimulates the laying down of new collagen. This in effect remodels the skin, tightening it, improving skin quality and improving the overall appearance to the skin.
Are there any alternative treatments?
For Active Acne, these include topical antibiotics, topical benzoyl peroxide, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptive (in females) and topical and oral retinoids. How many treatments will be required?
Initially a course of 2 to 4 treatments is usually recommended at 4 to 8 weekly intervals with the NLite pulsed dye laser. Subsequent top up treatments may be required after this at approximately 6 monthly intervals. The effects of the treatment maybe prolonged with the use of medical grade skin care products. With respect to Dermaroller a course of 5 treatments is recommended in the treatment of Acne Scarring at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks, to achieve optimal results.
Are there any side effects?
With respect to NLite pulsed dye laser, the treatment is relatively painless. Side effects, other than slight redness lasting a few hours or mild bruising lasting a few days, are thankfully rare. There is a small risk of pigment change in patients with darker skin types. With respect to Dermaroller treatment redness and irritation of the treated area may occur (like sunburn). A small minority of patients develop flaking, bruising or blistering. This usually settles within a few days
